Top Tips to Ensuring Successful Delivery of Change and the Realisation of Planned Benefits
  1. In all change programmes & projects ensure all key stakeholders and change team members are focused on:
    1. The Business Case for the programme / project
    2. Maximising and realising the benefits
    3. The detailed end to end programme / project plan
  2. The Programme / Project SRO appoints a Benefits Manager to the programme / project at inception.  The Benefits Manager’s role is to ensure focus is maintained on benefits realisation and to identify and ensure all planned benefits are delivered as part of the delivery of the piece of change.
  3. Ensure Business Cases that are created and developed are:
    1. Robust
    2. Realistic
    3. Measurable
    4. Achievable
  4. Ensure Business Cases are updated at regular fixed time intervals (Checkpoints Reviews) to take account of newly identified internal and external impacts upon the programme / project
  5. If at any point within a programme / projects development lifecycle, the financial Business Case is no longer viable, then the change initiative should be stopped and should not proceed further until a thorough and detailed review of the achievability of the Business Case, goals, objectives, end to end project plan and benefits realization has been undertaken and the business and change communities are satisfied that sufficient benefit can still be achieved by completing and delivering the piece of change.
  6. Senior Business Owners are identified who agree to be accountable for the realisation and delivery of all planned benefits (Benefits Owners)
  7. Senior Business Owners are identified who agree to be accountable for the control of all planned new operating costs  (Operating Cost Owners)
  8. Agreed Benefits and operating cost realisation targets are included as key personal objectives within Benefits and Operating Cost Owners Personal Performance Plans.  This ensures benefits realisation is fully embedded within the business.
  9. Create a detailed project plan at inception / initiation of a project / Programme and keep it up to date throughout the change development lifecycle.  Remember “Those who fail to plan, plan to fail
